“Up Nights” EP
By Leslie Snyder
Doom and gloom hover over Wilmington, Delaware from an unsigned indie melodic EMO duo called Up Nights. Up Nights sings songs about broken dreams and being trapped by the burden of self doubt. Up Nights released their self titled EP on June 30, 2013 featuring five “heart wrenching” tracks send chills up one’s spine while sounding similar to grunge rock icons Nirvana. This duo is not afraid to sing about the dark “underbelly” of society bringing out “brooding” melodies and “weeping” vocals.
The lonely journey begins with the first track “The Inside of Your Trunk.” This track features sorrowful vocals and dreary alternative rock melodies. This track is a dark tale about a man who passed out in another person’s car after a night of partying. The man does not remember anything that happened from the previous night. However, the man does feel sick and he is extremely embarrassed. Meanwhile, heartache oozes out of the third track “Stumble.” This track features “gritty” vocals and “gloomy” alternative rock melodies. This track is a heartbreaking tale about a troubled couple who is in a relationship that they really should not be in. The troubled couple’s relationship is full of drinking and drama. This couple is absolutely miserable, but too stubborn to realize it.
Finally, the lonely journey ends with resentment in the fifth track “Don’t Look Me Up.” This track features sorrowful vocals and “thunderous” alternative rock melodies. This track is an angry tale about a man who feels cheated by a friend that he once trusted. So, the angry man no longer wants to be associated with his former friend because of all of the trouble that he has caused in his life.
Up Nights has a promising future on today’s music scene. This duo’s “gloomy” EMO music brings up serious issues such as substance abuse and depression which is a very serious problem in society. The “Up Nights” EP is perfect for fans of early alternative and grunge rock with its ominous view of life.
